To save her life and the lives of many others, Alma becomes the conductor of the legendary Auschwitz women's orchestra. This is the story of Rosé and the survivors of the Auschwitz Women’s Orchestra and their offspring.

In this raw and funny queer identity story, internationally acclaimed Canadian /New Zealand performance artist Deb Filler faces the ultimate distance: her mother is dying far away in New Zealand. Stranded in her adopted home, Deb’s grief sparks a radical creative quest to unpack her mother’s fractured legacy as a German-Jewish refugee.

To heal, Deb does what she does best—she steps into the spotlight. She writes a deeply personal play, choosing to literally embody her own mother on stage, while casting a young actress to play a younger version of herself. Together, this intergenerational duo takes the production to her mother’s birth country of Germany.

As they tour, the lines between performance and reality blur. The journey evolves into an intimate, cross-generational voyage where both women confront their own complicated maternal relationships, displacement, and the ever-shifting definition of queer belonging. My German Roots are Showing is a poignant exploration of how we survive trauma, find our chosen families, and pass our survival mechanisms down to the next generation of queer artists.

Set against the backdrop of a newly liberated Poland in 1990, where the collapse of Communism is uncovering long-buried truths, Canadian surgeon Anna Edelstein receives a life-altering confession from her dying mother, a Holocaust survivor: she once had an older sister who vanished during the Second World War. Determined to uncover the fate of the family she never knew existed, Anna journeys into a country still haunted by its past. There she forms an unexpected bond with an elderly survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, whose courage and humanity transform her search into something far greater than a quest for answers. As hidden histories emerge, Anna discovers that the deepest legacies are not only those we inherit, but those we choose to carry forward.

As their past collides with the present, they must confront their innermost beliefs and navigate a changing city on the brink of transformation, where personal truths intertwine with the tumultuous debate on language and identity.
